I use FAT32 for my cross platform file system which forces you into Virtual Disks that are split into 2 GB slices. Even with compatible MacFUSE and NTFS_3G with caching installed, NTFS writes on the Mac are pretty slow.
VBS script that can be used to toggle it on or off as well.īy the way I did try storing the VMs on an NTFS file system drive, thinking that would be the best protection for cross platform. In Windows there is a utility under Accessories->Accessibility called On-Screen Keyboard that you can use to toggle Num Lock off and on. One of the machines came up with Num Lock turned on and it was a little challenging to get it turned off. I then hosted the machines on an IBM Thinkpad.
The only other little gotcha I encountered was I normally run my VMs under Fusion on a MacBook Pro notebook using the built in keyboard. There is somewhere on this site that provides compatible versions, just don't remember where I found it. I ensured that the respective Player and Fusion versions I was using supported the same hardware version as well as Tools version.
As etung pointed out, likely your shared directories will not be present on the Windows hosted environment (I ended up defining appropriate shared directories on the respective hosts, and only one is valid at a time depending on what platform it is currently running on. I have moved virtual machines back and forth between Fusion and VMware Player hosted on a Windows XP machine.
